The Joy of Romance

I'm thrilled because August 1 marks the start of Read-A-Romance Month, a month long online celebration of romance and the romance genre created by the brilliant Bobbi Dumas. This year, I'm even more joyful because the uber awesome and indomitable Sonali Dev actually mentioned me in her RARM post. SQUEE! Thank you, darling!

So here's my contribution to RARM 2015:

I read and write romance because it brings me joy.

One of the first things I fell in love with in Texas are the long stretches of desolate roads ribboning into the horizon under a wide open sky. I'd get in my truck, turn the radio on and take off. The exhilarating rush of freedom filled me with joy. A joy that made me grin and feel invincible.

But recently, after Sandra Bland and her ill-fated Texas traffic stop, I have lost that particular joy. Now when I drive, especially along almost empty stretches, my heart hammers a frantic beat as it climbs into my throat and I keep checking for law enforcement. I'm not Black, but I'm not White either. I'm brown with a Muslim name. More importantly, I'm a woman.

Sometimes I think most of the world has declared a war against women.

I know I need to reclaim my joy, master my fears, and live. So I seek refuge in romance.

Romance knows no boundaries: people of all colors, all orientation, all religious identity, all economic strata, from different worlds and of various abilities, fall in love. That is the root of all conflict and also hope.

Experiencing two characters falling in love fills me with hope. I dream with them about a wonderful future, I swoon at that perfect dialogue and first kiss, I wonder how these two will overcome the roadblocks in their relationship and how they'll be better together, I shed tears for them and cheer them on.

No matter how tough things get, the hero and heroine may falter and stumble, but they never give up the love they feel for each other. Heroines and heroes are strong, unique and celebrated as individuals and together.

When they finally earn their Happily-Ever-After, I'm filled with hand-clapping, twirling joy.

When the world seems to be falling apart, romance shares an important message: "Love Conquers All."

I know the stories I read and write are fiction and they can only hold me for a little while. I know the glass is both half-full and empty, but I choose to celebrate the water within the glass and the love within the pages. Sometimes, you just need that bit of a respite, a reminder of what is important, to catch your breath and continue to live life with joy in your heart.

Recommendations: Here are some authors who have helped replenish me -- Sharon Shinn, Marjorie M. Liu, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh, Jeffe Kennedy, and Sonali Dev, L.J. Charles and Sabaa Tahir and so many more.

Q and A:

1 - Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced sheer joy.

Mina: Wildfire won the 2014 Prism award for best first book. The first time I held the award in my hands, surrounded by my family and friends, with chocolates (I was at the KOD Death by Chocolate party) waiting for me was when I experienced sheer, perfect joy.

2 - Tell us about a place that brings you joy, or is attached to a memory of joy.

Mina: The Llano River. A beautiful river to play in, water so clear you can see fish, rocky outcrops to climb and explore, wildflowers in bloom. This was where my DH first said "I love you" to me and where we've spent countless family reunions. It always brings me joy.

3 - Tell us about a sound that brings you joy (or a memory attached to sound — music, laughter, wind chimes… ?)

Mina: My daughter's unrestrained giggles.

4 - What recent book have you read that brought you joy. (Or a book you read in your life that brought you so much joy you’ve never forgotten it.) Why?

Tiger Eye by Marjorie M. Liu, a paranormal romance, was life changing for me in terms of reading and writing. It’s partially set in China and the hero, Hari, is Indian and a tiger shifter. I not only loved the story (still do), but it also opened my mind to the reality that yes, you can have stories set in Asia, with Asian heroes and Asian foundations. It made me realize I could write my stories.

5 - And for fun, the joy of choice ;o) ~
Pick your Chris! Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Chris Rock, Chris Evans or Christopher Plummer (circ. 1964 aka Capt. Von Trapp?) - trying for a little diversity! ;o)

Mina: Chris Pine!

Leave a comment telling me what brings you joy (and your email or twitter handle so I can contact you if you win) and you maybe randomly picked to win a signed copy of WILDFIRE.

xoxo,

Mina

Recap of My First RWA National Conference

While I have been writing for most of my life, romance since 2004, this was the first year I attended the RWA National Conference. Once I'd registered and booked my hotel, once I'd accepted the reality of my going, this was me:

Going to RWA...finally! on Make A Gif

(make animated gifs like this at MakeAGif)

I was like: "Yippee-yi-yay! I'm going, going, going!"

I was finally making it to the Romance Writers of America conference, the national gathering of my people. People who wrote and read and loved books, who actually understood me and my obsession with words, and there'd be books. So many books!

Once in San Antonio, I made this face quite often to the amusement of my more experienced peers...

kiIBoZ on Make A Gif, Animated Gifs

I made it is every time I saw the awesome Nora Roberts. When I did speak to her (okay, I fan-girl gushed at her), she was uber gracious and posed for a picture:

Since I had a breakfast date with Nalini Singh, I was up at the crack of dawn. Fortunately by the time we met, I was able to control my fan-girling and actually have a conversation. We both gushed about Sari Sister Sonali Dev's Debut Release:

Then, Nalini showed me how to take a selfie:

I also attended part of her Writing Paranormal Romance workshop and caught this gem:

"Be logical, be consistent, and be passionate!"

Speaking of workshops, they were awesome and there were several tracks to choose from -- craft, marketing, industry, self-publishing, career, writer's life and more. I attended several and learned a lot!

My favorite was the last workshop I attended -- Reviews: Reaching, Receiving and Reacting to Them. The presenter, Sarah Wendell from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, did a great job.

Her straight talk made sense and put reviews into perspective. But, even better, she's freaking hilarious and made me (and others) laugh out loud over and over. By Saturday afternoon, I was in zombie mode and a good laugh was exactly what I needed. I left energized and headed to a donut party courtesy of Carolyn Jewel, one of my co-authors on the Alphas Unleashed anthology.

This next picture perfectly sums up my first RWA experience:

Yes, it was SWEET! Wildfire did me proud...

2014 Prism Award Winner for Best First Book
2014 Prism Second Place winner in Light Paranormal

2014 Published Daphne du Maurier Award finalist in the Paranormal category

Would I attend another RWA National Conference?

A List of Happenings

Wow, so May took me by storm (literally) and had me in tears (good ones). So much happened that I'm still stunned, though exhilaration has crept in on soft cat paws. Yay! So let's catch up with all the news...

I'm participating in a paranormal romance anthology, Alphas Unleashed, with some awesome authors: Carolyn Jewel (I love her stories!), USA Today best selling author S.E. Smith, and my friend & RomCon darling Michele Callahan. SQUEE! I'm honored and thrilled to be working with all of them. Check out our fabulous cover (received in May):

Available: June 15!

I also found out Wildfire, the book of my heart, is a finalist in both the 2014 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence and the 2014 Prism Contest. Wow, yes, this news made me cry and laugh. It has kept me happy dancing throughout the month. What a wonderful nod from my peers. And, wow, there are others who love my story as much as I do...SQUEE!

And then there was RT in New Orleans. About 3000 people attended the conference and then add in all other people who were at the hotel for different reasons...yup, you can imagine the crowd. It let me frazzled, dazed and confused for the most part. However, I did manage to meet up some awesome authors I have loved and admired and that was so much coolness!

(Met up with my mentor CJ Lyons! This was even more special because the first time I met her was in a Master Class that just happened to be in New Orleans....)

And I totally gushed and fan-girled over Marjorie M. Liu and Megan Hart, fortunately they handled me with grace and amusement. I also had a very nice breakfast with Rachel Caine, visited an oyster bar with Cathy Clamp, and hunted down oatmeal with L.J. Charles. I went on a ghost tour with Cynthia Eden, Katie Reus, Kaylea Cross and friends...yup, made lots of wonderful memories!

Then I returned home to tornado warnings, hail and, blessed, rain. After living with drought conditions for a long, long while, watching it dry out our lakes and turn much of West Texas brown, I'll take the hail and be thankful for the rain that filled our lakes and nourished our gardens.

While I'm grateful for all the wonderfulness of May, it's good to be back home and in my own space. Happy reading y'all!

Seriously Shifter: Dragon!

I love shifter stories and when Anna from Herding Cats and Burning Soup mentioned the Seriously Shifter blog hop...well, I had to jump aboard.

Alpha Male Madness Hop

Of course, I'm going to grab this opportunity to share about my favorite shifter type -- dragons! Fierce and mysterious, ancient and timeless, these gorgeous creatures inspire my imagination.

My favorite dragon series is G.A. Aiken's Dragon Kin series -- the dragons are fierce, sexy and,oh so funny. The heroine or hero counterparts are clever and loyal, they definitely deserve their dragons. And the stories are pure fun!

G.A. Aiken Dragon Bundle: The Dragon Who Loved Me, What a Dragon Should Know, Last Dragon Standing & How to Drive a Dragon Crazy

Of course, my dragon love has bled into my writing and, dragon oh dragon, I had a blast writing my most recent release Wildfire: A Paranormal Mystery with Cowboys and Dragons. And I made a special necklace to go with the story! :)

So I'll giveaway a signed paperback of Wildfire with a dragon necklace and also a $5 Amazon gift card. It's a US/CANADA giveaway.

Check out all the other participants and their giveaways on the Seriously Shifter Blog Hop!

Tracking a Globetrotting Book

LOVE all the pictures of Wildfire from around the world!

It all started in West Texas. Wildfire: A Paranormal Mystery with Cowboys and Dragons is the first book I set in my adopted home/playground of  West Texas. So I was ecstatic when this showed up:

This picture is all kinds of awesome! It's in my favorite library (Stephens Central Library in Tom Green County), with the statue of award-winning Western author Elmer Kelton, librarian/reader Chelsea P. and Wildfire. LOVE it!

Even more fun is that readers have sent in pictures from Scotland, Australia and from places all around America. And I'm hoping more pictures will be coming in. The adventurous part of me can't wait to see where all the book ends up!

But the best part is that the readers are helping me with my #readingWildfire project.

Welcome to Reading Wildfire, a social experiment about connecting through reading.

Stories are meant to be read and shared. When my kids did the Flat Stanley/Flat Daisy project, it fired up my imagination and inspired me to create this experiment: to send one of my stories out into the world and track its adventures, and to have fun and do some good in the process.

For every 10th picture received, I’ll make a $10 donation to The Malala Fund for the education of girls in the developing world (I’m hoping it’ll add up to a nice sum at the end of each quarter when I’ll make the donation). So if you have the book, take a picture! If you have the digital copy, put the cover on your ereader and take a picture! Then send the picture in to me at minakhan@wcc.net

Thank you dear readers & please keep sending pictures...they brighten my world & go towards a good cause! :)  Here's the Tracking Wildfire Pinterest board for you to check it out.

Happy Reading!

Mina

Pictures From the Southern Magic Luncheon

Even though I'm in Texas and the Southern Magic RWA chapter is in Alabama, I love being a member (because some of my most favorite writing/reading peep are in it) and I love attending their annual Romance Readers' Luncheon. They have some awesome keynotes...last year it was Sherrilyn Kenyon, this year it was Jeanine Frost...(keep reading to find out about 2014!)

(Posing with Jeanine Frost, one of my favorite authors)

"Romance celebrates emotional & relationship empowerment" ~ J. Frost
Of course, my fun always starts when my awesome friend Carla Swafford picks me up from the airport. Last year, thanks to getting a bit lost, she gave me the most wonderful tour of Birmingham. This year she kept repeating the mantra "No side trips!" and got me to the hotel in time for the Friday reception. We had plenty of laugh on both trips...and that is always a good start to the weekend.

(Carla with my signing dragon and my book at the luncheon)

Here are pictures of some of my favorite peep I love seeing every year:

(Here's M.V. Freeman, the president of SM who seemed to be in 5 different places at one time! I got to sit at her table and received a very nice bottle of Grey Goose vodka...representing her very sexy Russian hero)

Author Naima Simone, who always brightens up any room with her giggles...she, Carla and Heather put together an awesome video which was super cool and super funny. I hope they share it online because you don't want to miss it. Hee, hee...they share it. So enjoy: http://youtu.be/DF8-2FIMzVM

And Heather, one of my favorite readers/librarians ever! But I also made new friends...like author Debbie Herbert who had her book come out just the day before...
(Don't you love her cover?)

Of course, Southern hospitality was front and center. Besides welcome bags for every attendee, there were supercalifragilistic baskets given out as door prizes and then others that were raffled off...so cool! Check out the awesome basket I won:

Eeep!!! In other words, Dragon and I enjoyed our visits loads and can't wait to be back in sweet Alabama for the 2014 Southern Magic Luncheon when the keynote will be...SYLVIA DAY!!! Eeep!!!

A Time for Wildfire, Cowboys and Dragons...Oh MY!

It's September! Eeeep. That means I have a book release coming up....WILDFIRE: A Paranormal Mystery with Cowboys and Dragons. My first novel (yes, dear readers, I listened to your requests to write longer). So excited! Check it out:

Here's the Blurb:

Lynn Hana Alexander is a 25-year-old Japanese American shape shifter haunted by guilt. She’s been questioning herself and her dragon abilities ever since she failed to save her grandmother.
When her best friend is threatened by mysterious fires burning up acres of West Texas, Lynn rushes to the rescue determined not to fail again. However, with a tempting firefighter, a flirty city developer and dragon pheromones distracting her, how is she going to find the arsonist? And worse: is her primary suspect a malicious rogue dragon or the love of her life?

Since I'm indie publishing and find the pre-order situation for indies a bit complicated, you'll have to wait until Friday, Sept. 20, 2013. However, if you want CLUES as to what's inside the book...check out my Pinterest board for Wildfire :)

Releases come with nerves -- I worry about every little detail; and read through One More Time to make sure the story, and the copy, is best can be; I probably drive my editor a bit nuts and owe her chocolate. I'm also filled with happy anticipation. Finally, after all the hard work of writing, editing, revising and more, I get to share this wonderful new story with the world.

So September and a new release also means I'll be spending a lot of time reflecting on the Serenity Prayer (my favorite):

Wishing y'all a wonderful September!
